Scar formation is a natural part of the healing process but abnormal scars can occur up to 18 months after the healing process has begun. Not all scars become abnormal but those that do, can have a negative impact on a person’s quality of life.
It is estimated that scars affect approximately 4.5 to 16% of the general population and, depending on the degree of disfigurement, can have a profound impact on the psyche of the patient. In addition to low self- esteem, patients may experience limited mobility, pruritus, pain, and/or dysthesia. The two main types of scars include hypertrophic scars and atrophic scars. While hypertrophic scars often develop following surgical procedures, atrophic scars can result from traumatic injury to the tissue.
Strong evidence has demonstrated the efficacy of silicone gel for scar treatment and abnormal scar prevention; silicone gel has become the preferred option for physicians. Kelo-cote® is the only patented silicone gel clinically proven to smooth, soften and flatten scars; it also relieves itching and discomfort. Kelo- cote® is recommended by physicians all around the world.
Kelo-cote® is a revolutionary and patented product that maintains the positive benefits of silicone gel sheets while eliminating the concerns and limitations associated with the use of sheets. Kelo-cote® gel or spray is easy to apply. It rapidly dries to form a transparent, breathable, flexible and waterproof layer; it forms a bond with the outer layer of the skin, protecting the scar and allowing it to mature through normal collagen synthesis cycles. This improves the physiologic and cosmetic appearance of the scar.
Kelo-cote®:
- Softens and flattens raised scars
- Reduces redness and discolouration
- Relieves itching and discomfort
Cosmetics can be applied, once the Kelo-cote® has dried. It is suitable for children and people with sensitive skin and as it forms a flexible layer, it can be used on irregular scar surfaces, in joint areas, and large area scars such as those caused by burns or major trauma.
The recommended minimum treatment time is 60–90 days. Larger and older scars may take longer and continued use is recommended if improvement is still seen after the initial 90 days.
Kelo-cote® is available in a gel formulation (15g and 60g) or a spray (100ml). It is also available in a UV gel formulation (15g) which has SPF 30, so that scars can be protected and healed, without additional damage from the sun.
